Catching Fish for Jesus

Hi! I’m Michael! I am eight years old and in the third grade. I live in Monterey, California with my family of six: my parents, an older sister and brother, and a younger sister. When I grow up, I want to design airplanes or be a dentist like my Dad.

For my last birthday party, instead of receiving presents, my Mom suggested we have a donation box for ASAP. She asked, “Would you mind if your guests give a donation to ASAP instead of getting toys?” I said that would be fine. I don’t like toys that much anyways and I was glad the money would go to help the Cambodian children. I have plenty of things but the Cambodian children have little.
I’ve been lucky to go on mission trips with my Dad because he has a heart for missions. I’ve been to Cambodia twice; the first time was when I was four years old and the second time, I was five years old.
My first memory of Cambodia was eating dragon fruit, lychee, and mangosteen, tropical fruits I had never eaten before. I tasted the sweetest mangos in Cambodia! I remember a big pond full of lily pads. That’s where I saw the biggest dragonfly! I had so much fun playing tag with the Cambodian children. I made friends with a teacher from Cambodia Adventist School, Benjamin Kipzanang. He made paper boats and cameras for me.  I have fun memories hanging out with him.
I like going on mission trips because I get to meet new people, make new friends, try new food, and learn about the country I’m in. And it feels good to help others. I enjoy helping out with the children’s classes and participating in the song services.
Going on missions trips has taught me to be less selfish and catch “fish” for Jesus instead. I would encourage other kids to go on mission trips so they can experience this for themselves!
