A “Holy Spirit Led” Fishing Trip
By Pr. Sous Nath
One day I went to visit the Khmer-Islam village. I saw a group of people building a house. They were looking for someone to help them carry the heavy doors up to the second floor. As I offered my help, the house owner was very grateful. We quickly became friends. He asked me where I was from and what I did for a living. I told him, “I am a servant of God and I serve His people on this earth.” He was surprised to hear this response. He asked me, “who is your God?” I was grateful that God had given me an opportunity to tell someone about Him and also to share the Good News. I told him the story of Jesus birth and His reason for coming to this earth.
After hearing the story, he was quite impressed and was eager to learn more about Jesus. I gave him my address and contact number. I invited him to visit me in his free time.
A week later, He came to me and said, “I am very impressed with the story about Jesus. I like Jesus and agree with the word of God. Nobody else can have the authority and power that God and His Son have. I have chosen Him as my Savior and I want to accept Him in my heart and life. I believe that I will receive salvation through His grace.” Later, he also persuaded his wife and children to follow Jesus Christ.
His mother-in-law used to live with them. When she heard that they changed their religion and accepted Jesus into their lives, she got very upset with them. She tried to convince to them to stop believing in Jesus. But they were strong in their belief and refused to listen to her. Instead, they encouraged her to believe in Jesus. She refused to accept Jesus. She decided to leave and move to her son’s house. She hates Christianity and does not want to be around Christians.
My friend was worried about this situation which he and his family were going through after accepting Jesus into their lives. All the relatives rejected him and did not want to have any relationship with him and his family.
He came and shared his problem with me. I comforted him and prayed with him. I told him, “It is not always easy to live as a Christian. There will be difficulties. But God will comfort you and will be with you at all times. He will care for you and take all your worries away.” After hearing these words he seemed strengthened and returned to his village.
After this incident, it was hard for me to enter into the Khmer-Islam village. They would persecute me when I would go to visit my friend. They warned me to stop spreading the Good News and telling people about Jesus in the village. They tried to scare me away.
I continued to visit the people in the village so I could win more souls for Jesus. Every time I went there, they tried to harm and abuse me. But my purpose was to spread the gospel and every time I went there I prayed for protection. I thank the Lord for blessing me with boldness. I have found that I am not afraid of people or of persecution.
One day when I went to visit my friend, he took me to go fishing at his village lake. There were other people from the village that were fishing. I noticed that some of them saw me, recognized me, and then began whispering to each other. I decided to look up at them and smile as I continued to fish with my net. Soon, several people who were also casting their nets came over and started talking to me. I was so happy as I knew that God was giving me a good opportunity to tell them about His word. He must have prepared their hearts to listen to His word. I believe the Lord gave me an opportunity to sow seeds in their hearts. I told them a story about Jesus on the lake fishing with Peter. When I finished my story, there were two families that were moved by the Holy Spirit. They expressed interest in learning more about Jesus. They asked me to pray for them.
It brings me so much joy to tell others about Him. I have given my life to God and my purpose in life is to do His will. I believe that God will bless those I meet because He is the One who is bringing them to me. I am very encouraged to work hard for my Master. I have seen how the Holy Spirit is working in me and through me. He is helping me when I tell others about Him. He prepares the way for me. He protects me from all the harms and dangers and He goes before me. I do not need to be scared, I need only to faithfully do the task that he has given to me as His servant on this earth.
